Co-parenting Seminar


Helps parents manage family changes in a positive, resourceful manner and is designed to minimize the disruptive effects of conflict, separation and divorce on the lives of children and their parents. Parents learn about the emotional impact of family conflict on children, the developmental stages of children and how family changes affect different stages, appropriate discipline, managing transitions between households, explaining family changes to children, developing constructive communication with the other parent and many other skills and resources. Two 3-hour sessions are held consecutive nights. Self-referrals register through the Family Services Office.
Fee: is $125 per person

Parenting Time Mediation


Court-appointed mediators provide two 1 or 2-hour sessions to resolve disputed decision-making and parenting time issues. The mediator reports the outcome of the mediation through a written memorandum to the Court. If the parties reach an agreement it is reduced to writing, signed by the parties and submitted to the Court.
Fee: $65 per hour per person.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.
Provider: The Family Services Office maintains a list of court-approved mediators.

In-home Behavior Services


Focuses on providing parents strategies for managing challenging behaviors of children ages 2 to 9. Parents are provided with hands-on tools and one-on-one support to help reduce problem behaviors in the home.
Fee: $57.50/hr.
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.

KIDS' Connection


KIDS' Connection offers support and education to children whose families are experiencing conflict and disruption. The program promotes an enhanced sense of self-worth and self-esteem essential to the development of healthy relationships as adults. Six - week sessions are scheduled by age groups (6-13 and 13-18).
Fee: $150 for the first child, each additional child is $30. Intake Fee: $50 per parent unless attending together. Fees shared by the parents.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.

Home Studies


A home study is a professional evaluation of the home environment and interviews with family members to assist the Court in making decisions that are in the best interest of the child(ren). The study includes criminal background and child abuse history inquiries.
Fee: $300 per residence.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.
Provider: Calvert County Department of Social Services

Supervised Visitation


Supervised or therapeutic supervised visitation services.
Supervised Fee: $25 per hour per child. Intake Fee: $50 per parent/guardian.
Therapeutic Fee: $80 per hour. If necessary, private contractors may be used; fees will vary.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.

Additional Provider: Promise Resource Center. Supervised visitation can be held in the family's home, agency office, or in the community.
Fee: 57.50 per hour per visit; includes mileage and report.

Evaluations


Custody Evaluation


A custody evaluation is a study and analysis of the needs and development of a child who is the subject of a custody dispute. It assesses the abilities of the parties to care for the child and meet the child's specific needs. The evaluation includes a review of court, educational, medical and legal records and interviews with each party and the child and can include collateral sources. Mental health evaluations may also be ordered.
Fee: $3,000 and up per person depending on provider.
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.
Provider: The Family Services Office maintains a list of court-approved private licensed providers.

Psychological Evaluations


Psychological evaluations assist the court in determining custody and access decisions that are in the best interest of the child(ren). The evaluation will address issues of parenting strengths and weaknesses and the presence of any severe psychopathology that would impact the children's safety or adjustment. The evaluation will also examine the possibility of alienation or estrangement that would impact the children's relationship and attachment to either parent. May include child(ren). May include psychological testing.
Fee: Vary depending on the level of evaluation and provider. Retainer: $700. Range: $1,500-$3,000 per person.

Provider: The Family Services Office maintains a list of court-approved public and private licensed mental health providers in the community.

Psychiatric Evaluations


Psychiatric evaluations assist the court in determining custody and access decisions that are in the best interests of the child(ren). Evaluations will assess a party's mental health status with particular regard to diagnosing an existing mental health disorder and will include interview and observation. A written report will be sent to the Court that includes a five-axis diagnosis (if any) and a full description of the treatment plan (if any) including prescribed medication.
Fee: $173/person at Calvert County Health Department - Mental Health Clinic
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.
Provider: The Family Services Office maintains a list of court-approved list of public and private licensed mental health providers in the community.

Individual and/or Family Counseling


Fee: $100-$200/hr. depending on provider.
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.
Provider: The Family Services Office maintains a list of public and private licensed mental health providers in the community.

Children's Attorney


An attorney may be appointed to represent the child, the child's best interest or as a privilege attorney.
Fee: $175/hr.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.
Provider: The Family Services Office maintains a list of qualified attorneys.

Parenting Assessment


Two-session program including interviews with the parent, observation of parent-child interactions, assisting parents in completing a child development screener and AAPI (Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory). A detailed report includes a professional assessment of parenting skills and areas of need, analysis of the assessment instruments and specific recommendations.
Fee: $57.50/hr.

Parent Education


Parent Education - Basic Parenting
Parent education to learn the basics of child growth and development, child safety, nutritional needs, understanding the goals of behavior, developing independence in children, behavior management and discipline, and problem solving. Depending on case-specific issues, service may include child(ren).
Fee: $80-$100/hr. per person depending on provider.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.

Parent Education - Parenting for Success


A six-week class for parents of all ages that addresses child development, behavior management, abuse and neglect prevention, parent/child roles, relationship building, parenting styles and the effect of substance abuse on parenting.
Fee: $57.50/hr. per participant.
Fee Waiver: Eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered.

Parenting Education - NOVO Parenting Program


A six-week in-home parenting program that provides parenting support, skills training and behavioral health training. Focus includes non-physical discipline, behavior management, child development, nutrition, health and safety, abuse and neglect prevention, positive family interaction and attachment. Includes detailed final report.
Fee: $57.50/hour (about $1,200 per family)
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.

Parent Communication - Basic


Parent communication services assist parties in learning appropriate and cooperative communication and problem-solving skills to develop an optimum co-parent relationship. Providers are often chosen based on degree of conflict between the parties.
Fee: $80-$200/hr. depending on provider.
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.
Providers: The Family Services Office maintains a list of qualified counselors.

Parent Communication and Coaching


Parent communication and coaching services to assist parties in learning appropriate and cooperative communication skills to develop an optimum co-parent relationship and will include information on child growth and development, child safety, nutritional needs, understanding the goals of behavior, developing independence in children, behavior management and discipline, and problem solving.
Fee: $80 and up/hr. depending on provider.

Intensive Individualized Co-Parenting Coaching Program


An intensive co-parent coaching program. This program provides four coaching sessions. The sessions focus on helping parents identify the impact of specific areas of conflict on their child, develop a framework for shared values, rules and routines for their child to enhance consistency. Children may be included as appropriate. A detailed final report is provided.
Fee: $201.24 per parent.

Parent Coordination


Parent Coordinators are experienced mental health professionals who have specialized training in parent coordination and mediation and utilize a problem-solving approach in high conflict parenting situations. Parent Coordinators work with families on a long-term basis, helping parties learn to communicate more effectively and assisting them in resolving conflicts that might otherwise cause the parties to return to court. They have limited authority to make decisions resolving conflicts between the parents which do not affect the court's exclusive jurisdiction to determine fundamental issues of custody and visitation.
Fee: Retainer: $500-$750 per person. Range: $100/hr. and up depending on provider.

Substance Abuse Screening/Evaluation/Treatment


Substance abuse screening and/or evaluation, which may result in a recommendation for treatment.
Fee: Intake: $146 per person $92/individual session; Level 1 $46/group; IOP $169/group (3 per week).
Fee Waiver: Intake eligible for partial fee waiver if service is court ordered. Treatment not eligible for fee waiver. Treatment fees are the responsibility of each party.

Domestic Violence Programs


Men are referred to a 26-week abuser intervention program. The program is designed to confront the destructiveness of current thinking patterns, unlearn inappropriate habits, and to instill a desire to modify behavior and accept responsibility for abusive behavior.
Fee: $60 for the intake and $25 per weekly session.
Fee Waiver: Not eligible for fee waiver. Fees are the responsibility of each party.
Women are referred to the Women's Anger Management program. The program is designed to develop insight and skills, and to challenge aggressive behavior patterns.
Fee: $60 for the intake and $25 per weekly session.

Fee Waiver Information


For eligible services, a party may file a Motion for Wavier of Family Services Fees, based on significantly limited, income within fourteen days of the order date. Acceptable forms (PDF) are available in the Family Services Office or the Clerk's office. If the Court grants the motion, Family Services will pay a portion of the fee for each waiver approved. Please note that determination is based on documented need and funds availability. The following proof of income must be attached to the motion:

Federal Income tax return if self-employed (most recent)
Pay stubs for two months
Order for child support you pay or receive
Subsidized housing verification

Family Law Assistance


The Family Law Assistance Clinic (PDF) provides the opportunity to consult with a family law attorney free of charge regarding:

The attorney can answer questions about the legal process for family law cases, assist in the completion of relevant forms and offer limited legal advice on your specific case.

The clinic is offered every Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on a first come, first served basis. On the day of the clinic, you must complete a brief intake in the Family Services Office on the first floor of the Calvert County Circuit Courthouse, 175 Main Street, Prince Frederick, MD 20678. Intake begins at 8:30 a.m.
